Heal The Hood (Green Fingers initiative)

Mission

Creating mutually sustainable systems, in equilibrium.

 Vision

Implementing holistic healing which sustains itself regardless of outside forces.

The Initiative came about during the drought that South Africa experienced in 2015

  • If we can reduce the demand of vegetables from farmers, by simultaneously engaging schools to grow there own produce.
  • The next logical step is for the kids to take the knowledge they learned at school, home and apply them to hard work and gardening practices.
  • From an early age they get exposed and learn vital skills which prepares them for the world out there, as some of our kids think tomatoes come from Woolworth’s not from the soil.

The way it works is as follows.

  1. A school is approached with the ‘green fingers initiative’.
  2. Heal The Hood draws up the documentation for a 1 year commitment to manage and supervise the project, as well as training the care takers which will be responsible for maintaining the garden once the year is over.
  3. All seeds and tools, composts and any other resources are provided by Heal The Hood and is included in the invoice once funding has been allocated.
  4. Once the school has identified the students which will take part we will began training them at once.
  5. Once community gardens are set up Heal the Hood will hand out home work to be continued at home
  6. The soup kitchens will then run exclusively off the produce
  7. Heal The Hood will also buy the produce back at set amount during the summer months, and the money will then be used for sandwiches or stews instead of soup where applicable.
